Best Time of Year to Kayak the Louisiana Swamp
The short answer: spring and fall are the most comfortable, summer is best for alligators if you can handle the heat, and a morning paddle beats an afternoon one almost every day of the year. Here is the longer version.
The quick answer by season
- Spring (March to May): the sweet spot. Warm enough for alligators to be active, not yet brutally hot, and the swamp is green and full of bird life.
- Summer (June to August): the most alligator activity of the year, but Louisiana hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms. Go early in the morning and it is excellent.
- Fall (September to November): the second sweet spot. Cooler air, lower water, fewer bugs, and still good wildlife. October also gets you the eerie, atmospheric swamp.
- Winter (December to February): quietest. Alligators are sluggish and less visible in the cold, but the birding can be good and you will have the swamp to yourself.
When to see alligators
Alligators are cold-blooded, so they are most active and most visible when it is warm, roughly March through October, and they peak in the heat of summer. If seeing gators is the whole reason you are booking, aim for late spring through early fall and go on a sunny day, when they haul out to bask.
Why morning almost always wins
Whatever the season, an early start is the better paddle. The water is calm before the wind picks up, the light is good, the wildlife is most active, and in summer you beat both the worst heat and the afternoon storms that build over south Louisiana most days.
What about rain and storms
A little rain is fine and can be beautiful on the swamp. Lightning is not, and that is the real summer constraint. Afternoon thunderstorms are common June through August, which is another reason mornings win. We watch the weather and will tell you straight if conditions are not safe.
